For 2026, NTA has issued an Aadhaar update advisory ahead of registration and activated a demo registration link—and multiple reports indicate that the city-preference step may be removed, with exam cities auto-allotted using the address on your Aadhaar/present address. Final confirmation will appear in the official JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin.
This update has naturally raised doubts—How will my center be decided? What if it’s far from home? What should I do now?
In the sections below, we explain how exam-city allotment is expected to work if the new rule is adopted, what it means for travel and planning, and the single most important step students should take right now: ensure your Aadhaar/present address (including PIN code) is accurate before registration opens.

City Choice Option | Removed (no manual selection) |
System Type | Fully automated, data-based |
Possible Centers | Within your home state or the state where you currently live |
City Slip Release | Expected in January 2026, a few weeks before the exam |

No. NTA has removed the city-preference option from the application form. Your exam city will be allotted automatically using the permanent and/or present address you enter in the form. NTA generally tries to assign the nearest available center within the same state, but the final city depends on seat availability and logistics.
The exam city intimation slip for Session 1 is expected in January 2026 on the official website jeemain.nta.ac.in. You’ll need your application number and date of birth to log in and download it. Remember: the city slip only tells you the city of your center; the admit card (with exact venue, date, and shift) is released a few days before the exam.
If your address or PIN code is incorrect, your exam city could be allotted in the wrong area.
If NTA opens an application correction window, log in and update the address fields immediately (fields allowed are at NTA’s discretion).
If the correction window is closed, the city will likely be allotted based on the data already submitted. In that case, plan travel accordingly and keep a valid photo ID that matches your application details. For urgent help, you can contact the NTA helpline listed in the information bulletin.
Generally, no. Since city preference isn’t taken, there’s nothing to edit later for city choice. Even during the correction window, NTA typically does not permit changing the allotted city; at most, they may allow address edits before allotment. After the city slip/admit card is issued, changes are not allowed, except in rare, documented cases at NTA’s sole discretion.
No official changes have been announced yet. The pattern is expected to remain similar to 2025: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics each with Section A (MCQs ~20) and Section B (Numerical ~10, attempt any 5), for a total of 300 marks. Recent years included negative marking in both sections. Wait for the official 2026 information bulletin for final confirmation.
